Which vehicles can you choose from?
Small – Think of a Peugeot 208. This small car is perfectly suited for an individual or couple taking a short break away. There’s room for smaller pieces of hand luggage and will be more economical in it’s fuel consumption.
Medium – Imagine a Volkswagen Golf. A medium sized car would be best for your needs if you were travelling with a smaller group or family. There’s room for smaller pieces of luggage and it will be more comfortable on longer drives.
Full size – For a longer trip with more suitcases, why not use a full sized car, for example a Ford Mondeo. These cars are particularly comfortable if you’re going to be taking multiple excursions, travelling with family and luggage or if you’re taking an extended road trip.
Premium – A Mercedes C-Class is one example of a premium vehicle. With added creature comforts such as air conditioning, cruise control or parking sensors they are an attractive rental solution for some.
Multi-functional – Typical examples of multi-functional vehicles include SUVs or 4x4s. If you’re taking an activities holiday such as skiing or an expedition trip, this vehicle is best for you. There’s plenty of room for all your luggage and equipment, whilst the off-road drive makes it easier to get where you want to go.
However, it’s not just the type of vehicle that you need to consider, it’s the 5 W’s too.

Where are you going?
Whether you’re travelling within the UK or around Europe, nearly all vehicle rental companies give you the option to take your vehicle to a different country.

It’s important that you make your rental company aware that European driving could be an option. If you take it abroad without letting them know, you could be liable for any damage or costs incurred whilst you’re away.
Why do you need a certain size?
You might think that a larger car is most suitable for your needs, but remember that each car fits into different price brackets. For example, a Kia Picanto is going to cost you less than an Audi A3.
What are you taking with you?
For example, if you’re travelling with your entire family, then why not consider getting an MPV, SUV or a 4×4. Seating up to 7 people, these larger cars can easily accommodate a family and their luggage.
These larger vehicles come in both manual and automatic, so they easily suit most driving styles.
If you’re not taking a longer break or travelling with fewer suitcases, why not try a smaller car such as a Vauxhall Corsa or a Peugeot 108. These cars are ideal for a city break or if you don’t want to use your own car for a weekend trip away.
Likewise, if you’re moving house then a commercial vehicle could be your best option. Take for example a short wheel base transit van; these typically have more room for storage and can comfortably seat 3 people in the front.
If in doubt, then make sure that you ask before you complete your booking. Some rental companies do have a cancellation clause that means you only get a proportion of your reservation deposit back.
When are you leaving?
If you’re thinking about travelling at certain times of year (for example, early Summer or mid Winter) you need to consider how suitable your rental vehicle is going to be.
For example, if you’re travelling in the winter months, or your destination is likely to have snow, then a multi-function vehicle such as a 4×4 is going to be more practical than an Audi A6 or Mercedes C-Class.
Who will be travelling with you?
If you’re travelling with a small child, it’s important that you choose a vehicle that easily and safely holds a booster or car seat. At the same time as this, make sure that you have enough room for the additional luggage you’ll have to take with you.
