Keep Your Car Hire Costs Down

Are you thinking about hiring a car for your next getaway? Whether you’re taking a UK road trip or travelling abroad, there are lots of different ways to save money on your car hire. You can then put some of those savings towards something more fun such as attractions, meals or a swanky hotel for a night!

We have a few top tips and secrets to let you in on, to prevent you from over spending on your car hire wherever you go.

Book in advance

Just like those sneaky airlines, vehicle hire companies can boost their prices up closer to the date of when you’d like the car hire to begin. To avoid these prices, get on to booking your car hire well in advance. By booking in advance you’ll also be able to rent the vehicle you need and want, instead of turning up and having very few vehicles to choose from.

Although summer has nearly gone, keep in mind for next year that rental vehicles can cost more in those months than the other seasons. So you’ll have time to incorporate that into your holiday budget…

Bring your own child seat

If you’re off on holiday with the family and you have a young child with you, we advise on bringing your own car seat. If you don’t, you could end up paying over the odds for a child seat when you could’ve brought yours along free of charge. If you’re planning on flying to your destination and then hiring a car, we understand that this is extra baggage, but every little save helps.

Avoid renting a satnav

This may sound like a nightmare for those who aren’t great with directions, especially if you’re abroad, but satnavs can be pricey to rent from car hire companies. We advise using your own (if you have one) and if you don’t, either invest in one that has foreign maps, install a sat-nav app on your phone or go old school and use a trusty map!

Double-check the fuel policy

We recommend that you don’t hire a vehicle through a company that has a fuel agreement. Many vehicle hire companies hike up the fuel prices, meaning more money goes out of your wallet than when purchasing your fuel at a petrol station.

You could go for a company that has a full-full agreement. The company will provide you with a full tank of petrol and you then return it with a full tank.
